Alzheimer's

We aimed to develop forest therapy (FTP) programs to prevent dementia and related health problems in the elderly population, assuming that the health benefits are specific to the FTP type and depend on the psychophysiological traits of the participant. For this purpose, we have developed two distinct FTPs, namely, a guided breathing meditation program (BP) and a walking program (WP); we have adopted the Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SC) approach, which classifies individuals into one of three types of SC (SC1, SC2 or SC3) for medical treatment. FTPs ran 11 sessions in 11 weeks. We recruited 29/31/28 participants aged 65 and over for the BP / WP / control groups respectively; obtained electrophysiological measurements by electroencephalogram (EEG), heart rate variability (HRV) and bioimpedance; and analyzed the effects of the intervention with the analysis of the covariance. Compared to control, BP and WP produced benefits for neural activity and parasympathetic nervous activity (PNA), respectively, and both FTPs produced distinct beneficial effects on bioimpedance. Constitution-specific effects were also present. Participants of type SC1 and SC2 obtained positive effects in neural activity from BP and WP respectively. SC3 type participants showed improvements in PNA from WP. In conclusion, for older people, both programs conferred health benefits that would help prevent dementia, and the benefits were program- and constitution-specific. respectively, and both FTPs produced distinct beneficial effects on bioimpedance.
